Mashad (Place of Martyrdom) is an important place of pilgrimage
for Shi'ite Muslims around the world. It is the final resting place
of their eighth profit, Reza. Although the shrine of Imam Reza is
the focus of the city, there many other places of interest including,
the Grand Mosque of Gohar Shad, and the Mausoleum of Nadir Shah.
From Mashhad there are two very worthwhile excursions: firstly to
the town of Tous to see the mausoleum of a well loved and best known
Persian poet Ferdowsi, and to Neishabur, an ancient city on the
original silk road now housing Omar Khayam's mausoleum.
